Metaltech Accredited to OHSAS 18001

OHSAS 18001

Metaltech Ltd have now been certified in meeting the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001. This was awarded on 27th May 2016.

OHSAS 18001 is a framework for an occupational health and safety management system. It has allowed us to put in place the policies, procedures and controls to allow us to achieve the best possible working conditions and workplace health and safety, aligned to internationally recognised best practice.

The benefits of achieving OHSAS 18001 are:

“Achieving OHSAS 18001 was one of my personal goals identified shortly after I was employed with the company. The process of achieving the standard began around a year ago where Metaltech explored other market sectors in order to remain competitive within the market place and build upon production orders. One market sector explored was the Nuclear Sector. We entered a Fit 4 Nuclear (F4N) programme which helped us measure our current operations against standards required to supply the UK’s new generation of nuclear power stations. An initial self-assessment questionnaire was completed covering key areas of the business operation and performance. The self-assessment scored us quite highly in a lot of the key areas as we were certified to AS9100, ISO14001 and had Aerospace and Defence ADS SC21 bronze status for continuous improvement. The self-assessment highlighted the requirement of OHSAS 18001. A comprehensive action plan was constructed in order to minimise other requirements in order to achieve F4N status.

In October, with the assistance of Guthrie and Craig Consultancy, a gap analysis was conducted to outline any shortfall identified in order to be prepared for OHSAS 18001 stage 1 audit. The stage 1 audit was booked for January 2016 and there was a lot of paperwork based tasks to be completed in a very short timescale. Working to an action plan and strict timescales we were successful at Stage 1, however identification of areas for improvement were communicated to a deadline of March 2016 for Stage 2 readiness. The Stage 2 audit in March resulted in 7 minor NCR’s and 1 Major NCR. To gain certification all Major NCR’s were to be closed. A revisit was scheduled for May 2016 and we were successful in gaining certification.

A lot of tasks were achieved within a very small timescale and I am proud that we have gained OHSAS 18001 certification along with achieving F4N status.”
