Shop Floor Data Capture (SFDC) System

New SFDC System

In keeping with the company directive of process excellence the management team recognised that the existing system of gathering and disseminating information to the shop floor was in need of significant improvement. This was to reflect the changes in our working environment and customer driven quality requirements that have resulted over the last few years from changing heat treatment practices and a new customer base. Working in conjunction with Dr Ruben Pinedo-Cuenca (ERP Specialist for Teesside University) Metaltech have launched a new database to record, store and track customer orders. Kim Hedley (Production Administrator) has worked with Ruben from the onset of the programme to develop the bespoke system which integrates with the existing system of data storage and provides the Company with a working system which improves performance across all departments. It was recognised that the existing system was a contributing factor to inefficiencies on the shop floor which in turn manifests itself in performance across other departments throughout Metaltech.

Some of the inefficiencies that were targeted included:

New SFDC System

The SFDC system is able to capture data from operators in real time while providing additional information to key staff. New software has been developed which integrated the data from the old system (over 30 years of processing routeing/customer specific information) to develop a user friendly database which in turn satisfies the stringent requirements of Nadcap, AS9100, Nuclear and all existing customer standards.

Kim commented, “This new system greatly improves our traceability. Our operators and each operation have a barcode which automatically logs into the database. We see where each job is and at what stage it’s at; enabling us to inform our customers when their product is ready. Special notices and can be effortlessly put on each job and process route cards are more detailed. These components of the database help us meet the rigorous requirements of the aerospace industry and F4N”.
