New Molybdenum Disulphide Coating – MT2936

Working in conjunction with an established UK coating manufacturer, Metaltech have developed a molybdenum disulphide dry film lubricant coating for use in high load application aimed principally for use on articulated truck components, offshore products and aerospace components.

The coating manufacturer specialises principally in the aero engine and air frame sectors, industrial gas turbines, high temperature resistance and thermal barrier market. The diversification into the development of a coating for the articulated truck market was conducted over a period of 12 months. Extensive R+D has been undertaken on a collaborative basis to produce a Molybdenum Disulphide coating with the following properties:

When combined with a MnP underlay coating, corrosion protection in excess of 500 hours has been achieved (ASTM B117-03, Salt Spray (Fog) Corrosion Testing on coating thickness 20-30 microns). The product developed is supplied exclusively to Metaltech and will be commercially marketed as MT2936*.

Whilst developed principally for articulated trucks the MT2936 can equally be used in offshore, marine, ACE (agricultural and construction equipment) and other general applications were other molybdenum disulphide coatings are regularly used.

In summary, MT2936 produces a durable bonded coating containing a synergistic of finely divided lubricating pigments in a tough, thermosetting resin binder. MT2936 is particularly suited to the lubrication and corrosion protection of metallic wear faces running against a variety of polymeric wear materials as well as fasteners, springs, pistons, bearings and pressings.

MT2936 – Typical surface finish. Coating thickness 18-28 micron (average 25 micron), MnP underlay, MT2936 coated, cured at 150ºC. MT2936 – After exposure to 350ºC for 60 minutes.
Coating remains intact and fit for service.
